“Sure, Mr. Moody. I’d be happy to help.” Mr. Moody slams his hands down excitedly and rises from the desk with an enthusiastic grin. “Fantastic, Ms. Vega! I will set up an introduction with your tutor in the library this afternoon. He’ll be waiting for you there.” Feeling just as ecstatic by my choice, I rise from the chair. Mr. Moody is the most exuberant person I’ve ever met. He’s a portly guy with a balding head, rosy cheeks, and large dark eyes. He’s always wearing dark suits with funny ties that make us kids roll our eyes. The tie he’s wearing today is of Snoopy flying in the sky with Woodstock behind him.

“Good. I like a man who keeps his word.” A maid brought in drinks and snacks. Judy’s mother picked up a small cake. “Even the food looks rich,” she said before taking a bite. Judy laughed. “Mum!” David smiled. “Please, feel at home.” She nodded happily. “I already feel at home.” The three of them talked for a long time. Judy’s mother told stories from Judy’s childhood. She spoke about how Judy used to cry when she lost her dolls, and how she always loved helping people.

Several Weeks Later Jasper slowly eased his body onto its side. Mimicking sleep, he intently listened to the conversation between a young woman named, Cora, and the old nurse he’d heard called both Bess and Smithfield. He’d assumed that her true name was Elizabeth Smithfield with Bess being the nick name for Elizabeth, but names were funny things. He’d noticed the increasing pattern of nick names or abbreviated names being given to children at birth by parents wanting to be different. Therefore, he could have been incorrect on that assumption.
