As I scraped the debris away, my fingertips brushed against something hard—it was nothing like concrete. I thought it was a rock, so I gave it a hard yank. I pulled out half a bone. My hand trembled, and I dropped the bone to the ground. It hit the floor with a sharp crack. Julie looked back. "What was that sound?" And she spotted the thing lying on the floor. She then saw the skeleton curled deep inside the pitch-black cavity beneath the bay window, its body twisted unnaturally. The arms were bent and pressed against the chest, as if it were hugging itself in the darkness.

A few minutes later, Kael and Julius finally emerged from the trees breathing heavily. Both looked frustrated. “We lost whoever it was,” Kael said angrily. Julius cursed under his breath before walking toward us. “We searched everywhere,” he added. “There was nobody there.” Then Julius held something up in his hand. “But we found this.” He handed the object to me carefully. It was a small wooden hand bead. It was dark brown and old-looking. I frowned slightly and turned it over in my hand. Tiny strange symbols had been carved into it. “This isn’t English,” Julius said quietly.

Wasting the rest of my life on two pieces of trash wasn't worth it. I grabbed Theo's jacket and stood, brushing dirt off my pants. "Alright. Time to end this." I told Theo to bring both of them back, and he didn't complain. He just turned and left. Some time later, Theo dragged over two large sacks. The sacks squirmed and made muffled sounds. He opened them. Julian was inside the first one, reeking and skeletal. After half a month in the dump, parts of his body had rotted and maggots crawled through the wounds.

Once the room was clear, Sulien whispered to Eden, "Ms. Griffith, I followed your instructions and used the needles to slow the flow of his blood. He’s awake, but the toxin is still spreading. We can mask it for now, but we can’t keep it hidden forever. What’s the next step?" Eden discreetly handed him a pill as she bumped into him. He understood what she meant. Eden texted him, instructing him to use the needles to seal several points on Julius. Sulien had been learning traditional medicine techniques from Eden and had spent his time studying human anatomy from a holistic perspective. Enzo and another guy made a show of looking, shining flashlights. “Check the seal on those linens,” Enzo said loud to his guy, near the cab, pulling Mick’s attention. The other guy whistled, low and sharp, into the dark. From the shadows between the SUVs, a shape moved. Fast and silent. All in black…Julian. He slipped up into the back of the truck like a ghost. He had a small backpack. He didn’t make a sound, moving carefully. He moved between the crates, found a big empty one marked STERILE PACKING – FRAGILE. He slipped inside, pulled the lid mostly closed. Just a crack for air.

A week later, House Six stood deep underground in Bunker 039. The air was colder this far down. More metallic. It scraped the lungs on inhale. "Okay," Samuel exhaled, stretching his arms behind his head. "We've officially seen some crazy shit." He wasn’t wrong. Bunker 027 had held fossilized bones of a creature that resembled a dinosaur but not any species known to science. Its skull had six eye sockets. Bunker 031 was an untouched treasure vault, overflowing with diamonds and precious stones. Joy had called it obscene.

I heard snuffling sounds as I rounded a tent and stopped, only to find Cillium standing protectively over a small body: it was Julius. The pup was unconscious – but there were no bloodstains visible on his flank, so I prayed that it wasn't more than that. I stooped down to lift the tiny figure in my arms; once I had I turned to Cil, grateful that he hadn't Shifted back to human yet. *Will you carry him?*

“Rise…I guess.” I chuckle softly, and finally gather the courage to yank the sheet off Julius’s head. It's grotesque. He's nothing more than a skeleton covered in leathered skin. His eyesockets are empty, and his mouth is wide open in a soundless scream. “He’s screaming into the void,” Griffin offers unhelpfully. “We need to get him in his sarcophagus,” he says. “That usually calms them down.” “Elias is going to have kittens.” I look around the room. “Where the fuck is Jaeger?”

He had to help him. The Xeus was already looking at him when Jules entered the basement, his glowing green eyes alert and more than a little unnerving. His tall, large body seemed tense, his muscles rigid. There didn’t seem to be any new wounds on his body, which was a relief—there was no time to patch him up. “Hey,” Jules said, stepping closer to the metal table and pulling out the keys he’d stolen from his uncle’s room. He felt a jolt of anxiety, but the third key he tried did the trick.

I rounded a corner of jagged rock and froze. My eyes caught… My stomach did a slow, sick flip. My jaw dropped open. There, on the cold dirt floor, was… Julius. His hands were tied behind his back. His legs were bound. His mouth was covered with thick, black tape. He looked battered, bruised, his eyes wide and bulging with pure, unadulterated terror. Naked. He looked like a man who was already dead, just waiting for the final blow. What the fuck!
