Mercer is sitting in a chair, hunched forward slightly, his elbows resting on his knees, fingers tangled in his hair like he’s trying to hold himself together. His breathing is uneven, every inhale labored, as if he can’t catch his breath. His face is a mess, bruises darkening his skin, fresh cuts splitting across his cheekbone and lip. Dried blood stains his knuckles, smears across his hands, streaks across his clothes like he wiped them off in a hurry but didn’t quite get it all.
