KNOX Kai and I were sprawled out in my room doing important work. Important work had us glued to my laptop screen. LunaLust’s latest stream was playing, and neither of us had spoken in minutes—too busy watching and melting. Fuck. She was sexy. There was just something about her that reeled me in so deep I couldn’t care to detach. “Bro!” Kai muttered, “Why couldn’t the moon goddess give me a mate like that? What kind of injustice is this? Well, he sure knew how to shut me up, and he damn well knew it. “If you keep flustering her, she will just strip, and none of us will make it to the ceremony. I clarified and she nodded. "Did he actually act anyhow convincing for you when you said you liked him?" Layla's eyes grew wide at Adalyn's voice. "How can Kaiden be getting married next week?" "Kaiden's getting married next week? Wow, someone's marrying that asshole?" She shook her head then froze as her head rotated to me, probably just heard Adalyn well enough. "You told Kaiden you liked him?!" She screamed. Her loud voice frightened me.

The government used our team because we were dispensable. They don’t value our lives.”

“But don’t worry, you’ll figure that out in no time.” Creeped out, I took a step back, putting distance between us. I hated how he was speaking to me; it was frightening. But at the same time, I couldn’t stop my mind from making up fantasies about this guy, either. “K-Keane,” Kasey said, and she looked so frightened to even speak his name that I almost laughed. “Carter wanted me to show her around.” “Sure,” Keane breathed, flashing a smile at me. As we stood facing each other, he reached into his pocket for a cigarette, slipping it between his lips before pulling out a lighter and lighting it. He took a long, hard drag and blew the smoke into my face.

I led her on, over to the less busy part of the club and lo and behold, Kai was there, with a petite blonde wrapped around him. He spotted me and waved me over, telling the bouncer to let us through. “Alex, my man! So glad you could make it!” He stood up and pulled me into a bro hug, to which I returned back. “And you brought your mate as well! Brie Raymond, was it?” “Yes, nice to meet you, Mr. Kingsley.” “Oh no! Just call me Kai. Alex has told me so much about you. It’s so good to put a face to the name and my, you are even lovelier than how he described you!” He stretched out his hand in greeting.

At the place that feels like a memory he never made. Then, finally, he takes a deep breath. “…Okay.” Lucy clears her throat, trying to ease the tension. “I’m sure there’s some sort of… um… explanation.” “Yes, dear,” Kai says softly, his voice trembling. His eyes glisten as past memories flood back; the choices they made, the secrets they buried, the son they lost… and found. “Many years ago,” Kai begins, voice low and trembling, “When I was a young man at the Power Mastering College… I met Valarine.”

“Didn’t expect to see you here, Lucas.” Lucas’s grin didn’t falter. “Long time, Anderson.” Kai slid onto the bench beside me without asking. His leg pressed into mine like a silent claim. Possessive. Intentional. Lucas didn’t miss it. His eyes flicked to the contact, then back to Kai. “Still playing soccer?” Kai asked casually, shoveling a fry into his mouth. “Nah,” Lucas said. “More into robotics now. Less concussions, more trophies.”

Kaida asked, his voice threatening. “Kaida—” “I wasn't talking to you,” Kaida's eyes met mine for the first time since he entered the room, his blue orbs notched up with unreadable intensity. Kai sucked on his bottom lip. “Work hours closed, CEO. My daughter's waiting for me. Move aside.” “I asked you a question?” Kaida stepped closer to Kai, until they were inches apart. Kaida was slightly taller than Kai, boasting the build of a world-class footballer— lean, defined muscles, and athletic grace. But Kai made up for it in muscle mass, having a gym god physique, and quiet strength.
