When I walked into my mother's room, I immediately noticed a computer sitting on the desk. It was connected to the store's security system. The surveillance program was shut down now, but the files were still there. I started scrolling through the saved recordings. Some of the footage had already been deleted, but I still found screenshots from that day. And the person who had taken them was clearly visible. It was my mother. In that instant, it felt as if all the blood drained from my body.

Selene pushed the door open and handed me a set of pajamas. She started to say something— Then she saw the scars covering my body. Burn marks. Cigarette tips. From my collarbone all the way down to my tailbone. One hundred and eight of them. They looked like eyes, staring straight at her. Selene's face drained of color.
