He could hear hands working desperately at the lock and that made him brim with anticipation. Finally, he thought, till the door opened for him to see a tall macho man with overgrown beards and tattoos scattered all over his body. The shock from seeing the stranger made him almost unable to speak. He had heavy rock music pounding in his apartment. “Can I help you mate?” his deep voice could make anybody’s knees buckle with frightful intimidation. “Sorry…I came to the wrong door,” Kylian broke out in an uncoordinated stutter, “I was looking for some girl named Maya, she lives on this floor…I don’t know if you might know her, somehow.”

But the man pushed his face further away from the light—like he was trying to prevent Kevin from recognising him. “Show yourself,” he snarled, moving a few paces towards the dark, but then stopped when he saw the stranger walking towards him. The stranger walked away from the dark until his face became visible under the light. Kevin didn’t recognize him, but he saw that he was dressed in a police uniform. Then he realised he was a cop. “Who are you?” Kevin asked again, trying to be patient. “Not sure you’d remember,” the stranger started, his lips drew back in a half-smile. “But a year ago, you came to me to file a report about the kidnap of your fiancée,” he hinted.

She smelled like cupcakes. ''Yeah, I pr-'' I started but was cut off by a stranger saying hi. She pulled away from the hug and waved at him, ''Hey Kevin, why are you walking to school so early?'' So this was Kevin. He was a good-looking guy with fairly good style. ''I love the mornings, so I get time to enjoy it when I leave at the crack of dawn. Do you wanna join me? I got some more jokes'' he asked in a singsong tone.

“How do you know about the figure I just saw?” Kevin’s lips pressed into a thin line. He studied me carefully, then his gaze darted back to the yard, his brow furrowed. “I know more than you think,” he replied cryptically. His voice was low, almost a growl. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t important.” His words sent a ripple of unease through me. Kevin had been part of my life for years, but something about him now... it didn’t sit right. He wasn’t the man I knew. The distance in his eyes, the tension in his posture—it was like he was a stranger.

He felt his knees trembling as he waited. After several minutes of standing still and waiting, there came no response. He walked to the door and knocked again—this time even louder than the last. He waited again, but there was no reply. Then he wondered if Cedric was home. Kevin turned the door handle and found, much to his surprise, that it wasn’t locked. He blinked in surprise as the door swung open. It squalled on its hinges, loud and rusty. It struck him as odd—Cedric never leaves the door unlocked.

An urgent voice was heard from the door, and a stranger scooped up Selene into his embrace, praying silently, “Please be fine. Please be okay, I beg you. You were alright a while ago. What happened to you?” When Kevin saw him rushing the young lady out of the hotel, he could swear that he had seen the person somewhere before, but just couldn’t tell the exact place. … To be continued…
