All her life, via documentaries and word of mouth, Mercedes had heard of the countless unpleasant things which people who'd been kidnapped had to go through; beating, binding and restriction, rape, pressure for ransom and poor holding facilities, etc. And while she had never hoped or even slightly wished to be kidnapped, she had been surprised at how much of an exception had been made in her case.
