My body was relaxed in the softness of familiar sheets, and I debated whether or not I should open my eyes.

My body felt branded by her mouth. The moment she was steady she went down, and I watched her do it, watched her hand close around the knife on the floor and come back up with it pointed at my chest, and Killian went very quiet in a way that was almost amused, and something in me that had no business feeling anything found it… I took the knife before she completed the motion. “You won’t be able to kill me after this, Isora,” I said. My voice came out rougher than I wanted. “It will be hard to fight it now.”

I turn back to Alec, and even though my skull is pounding from the blow, there’s something like victory swelling in my chest. And then I see them. Silver Hunters coming out of the library and from around the building. Ten of them, at least. My stomach drops. I curl my hands into fists. I can do this. Heather and her friends were no match for me. What makes this group any different? One of the Hunters lifts their sword, and fire appears out of nowhere. It races through the grass, forming a ring around me. “Winter!” Alec shouts. I panic, looking for a way out, but the wall of fire is too high. The Hunter who cast it advances on Alec, who is too busy trying to get to me to see what’s behind him
