He went to silence it, but as his eyes fell on the screen, the color drained from his skin, replaced by a deathly, bruised purple. He stared at the screen for a long, agonizing beat before letting out a guttural, jagged laugh. He turned the phone around, thrusting it inches from my face. "So this is it," he sneered, his voice shaking with a volatile mix of wounded ego and hatred. "This is why you’ve suddenly found your spine. This is why you’re so 'brave' tonight."

She just looked at him. "You know what I am," he said from behind her. "I know." "Then don't—" He stopped. She turned around."Don't what? Don't look at you like you're human? Don't put a band-aid on your arm? Don't sit here in this shitty motel room with a man who kills people for a living and still feel safer than I've felt in years?" His jaw tightened."You don't mean that." "I don't say things I don't mean."

And trust was dangerous in a city like this—but it was worth it. The first signs of morning light spilled into the room, painting the walls gold and gray. I melted into it and cried into his chest. "You fool, your kindness will be the death of you. You'd rather die than kill your enemies, you're stupid, you know that?" I heard him say and I smiled in between my tears. I am a fool. Even if I want to, I can't bring myself to kill someone even though they wouldn't hesitate to kill me if given the same opportunity. I just don't have the heart for that. If that makes me a fool then so be it. Causing pain to others won't take away my suffering or the pains of my past so I'd rather spread happiness so that even if I live a short life, it would be worth it……..

And my sadness fueled this killer motive of mine. What’s the use of being happy and kind when the world is such a wretched and cruel place? You smile at everyone but everyone frowns at you when your back is turned. You help a brother pick up his weapon— a weapon he has designed to stab you, and you discuss his well-being while he plots to rip your heart out with that very weapon. Kindness seems senseless, and brutality now feels like reality. Why should I be good when my reward is always pain and anguish? Why should I show compassion to my friends when they only hope to change their identities and become my enemies?
