I sighed and leaned into Colton as we headed out of the office and down the hallway. It was late at night, so I didn’t expect to see anyone other than warriors. So I was very surprised when we turned the corner for the stairs to see Susie talking to the redhead receptionist, Kylie, I think. Susie looked over and then quickly looked away. I stared at her as my confusion cleared and it became clear exactly what she was doing here. Susie stepped into view, arms crossed, a sleek black collar with a small metal tag reading *10* circling her throat. Fresh bruises marked her wrists. “Not everyone is content with a mere Charlie,” she said, gaze flicking between them with open mockery. “If someone rejected him, it simply means they were aiming higher.” Susie crossed her arms tighter. The black collar and the number *10* made her new rank impossible to miss. Multiple dark marks decorated her neck—Ronan’s or Blaise’s, Kaela didn’t care to know.

6 Susie has a laptop, like the one I want one day. Silver and flat with keys that light up. I want to learn how to type, when I’m older. I want to teach my fingers to move that fast. My eyes fixed on the words in front of me. Those messages I see. Susie doesn’t have a dog, but I think he’s the type who’d suit one. Kirby’s voice was loud and filled the space. “I’m…I’m twenty-two, ma’am,” he replied, blinking rapidly for a few seconds. “Do you have siblings?” She continued her line of questioning, slowly pacing around the guy. He nodded, before quickly adding a verbal response. “Yes, ma’am. I have a little sister who is nine years old.” “Hmm…” Kirby finally stopped pacing, and she was right in front of him. Their faces were close to each other and she had a stiff look on hers. After a few seconds, Ben tried to speak but she stopped him.

There was a knock on the door and Susan answered it. "Lady Laura please come in." Susan said. Cassie and Janice came of the terrace. "We should start getting you ready Susan and Cassie." Laura said. "Cassie sit down it will not take long to do your hair then I will help Susan dress first." Janice said. Laura sat in the large high back chair and watched the girls put Cassie’s hair up in a bun with ringette’s framing her face. They put light make up on her. “He’ll call you later.” Susie nodded absently, already tapping at her tablet. “Mama Maxine said she’s picking me up this afternoon.” Claire froze. “Picking you up?” she echoed. “Yes!” Susie smiled brightly. “We’re celebrating today.” Claire swallowed. “Celebrating what?” Susie looked at her as if the answer were obvious. “Her birthday.” Claire felt something settle heavily in her chest. “I see,” she said carefully. “Did she invite you?”

“I guess it’s none of my business.” Susie: “Miss Ford is not Mr. Davis’s girlfriend, is she? I think Miss Ford is very keen on Mr. Davis.” Crystal took a cucumber out of the sink and took a bite of it, and as she chewed, she thought about Susie’s question and how she should answer it. Then, just as she was about to reply, Susie interrupted her. “What’s the matter with me?” she asked. “What would you do if Mr. Davis got together with Miss Ford?”

Susie flushed right then, and she pointed at me as she snapped, "Quinn Gooding! It's clear you just don't have a body like mine and are afraid to show it, so you had to ruin this for us?! How despicable!" Her lackey promptly agreed, "Exactly! You're such a rat! We finally have time to take it easy, but you're ruining it for anyone!" It was by a window that looked out onto the pedestrianised area of the high street, and the edges of the hanging basket flowers hung over the edge of the glass, bordering the scene with pale purple and bold yellow petals.
