The man with the white beard, dark shades, and, honestly, a tragic sense of fashion. But—” He looked up, baffled. “Why’s everybody so shocked?”

It was the laugh of a man who had nothing left to lose and everything to gain from chaos. "I like her," he said, seemingly talking to the air. Claire returned then, carrying a silver bucket and a bottle of vintage champagne. She set it on the table with a sharp thud, her eyes never leaving Klaus’s. He didn't wait for her to pour. He grabbed the bottle, popped the cork with a violent crack that sounded like a gunshot in the small space, and took a long swig directly from the neck.
