The Way He Looked at Me
The flustered chaos disappears and is replaced by pure smug delight.
“Well, well, well,” he says slowly. “Looks like the legendary neighbor isn’t an expert on everything after all.”
“What exactly am I not an expert on?”
“Being bookish.”
“I know plenty about being bookish,” I say confidently.
Total lie.
But I’m entertained now.
And boredom makes me reckless.
“Alright then,” he says, narrowing his eyes playfully. “Explain a book ban.”
“Never heard of her.”
A quick laugh bursts out of him before he clamps it down hard.
