They stayed like that until they heard gravel outside—JJ's truck, early, because JJ drove fast and wouldn't admit it. --- The day was good. The best kind of good—unforced and ordinary in the way that only the best days managed. JJ brought a girl. Hadn't mentioned it, just showed up with her—confident in the way that was so much his father it made Valentina blink. Her name was Cora. She was studying architecture. She shook Duke's hand and told him she'd heard a lot about him and held her ground when he held the handshake slightly too long. JJ watched his father assess her and watched Duke give a small nod and JJ's shoulders dropped two inches.

His daughter's words had cornered them completely. "So, you already knew about their relationship?" Dorothy asked defiantly. "If the Duke finds out what happened to her, are you prepared for the consequences? Especially since you are taking no responsibility at all?"

Duke said. "My mother is an orphaned Duke. Her family is my Father and I. I need to know the identity of that person anyhow," Lelia said.

“I mean, with my teacher salary, I can’t afford any of this, and I don’t want to use the card that Rowan gave me. Let’s just look for something cheaper.” Letty takes my hand and leads me to the couch, while Corrine asks the shop assistant to give us some time. “I don’t know if Rowan told you this, but you’re parents are freaking rich, Ava. You know who the Howell’s are, right?” She asks, and I nod. Everyone knew who they were. “Well, your parents are the Howell’s. Nora and Theo Howell” I stare at her, not sure whether I should believe her or not. I haven’t talked to them in a while, even though they’ve reached out a lot. I planned to visit them next week.

I watched Kora spring to her feet like she wasn't the one sick in bed moments ago. "Who are they? Where can I find the people who murdered my parents?" Kora asked, agitated and wondering who killed her parents. "Your parents were murdered by Alpha Galen and his wife because your parents refused to treat his sick wife, who was cursed. In anger, he killed your parents and made sure nothing was done about it because he covered his tracks, which is why you were returned to the palace in a basket and became a maid all your life." Kora ran into Allen's arms, thanking him for finding the killers of her parents.

Clarice left and the rest followed her. I turned to Kara, who looked down feeling uneasy. “Who are they?” Kara sighed. “That’s Clarice, Pink, and Beatrice–a very bad gang. Clarice’s mom is a CEO of an oil company, and her dad owns lots of hotels. My advice? Stay away from her. She is in trouble.” Kara's voice was breaking as she spoke. “Is this what a big school is all about?” I wondered aloud. “Not everyone is like them.” Kara reassured her. “My dad runs a pharmaceutical company, and my mom runs a textile company. My parents are quite rich, but I’m not like that. What about you?”

I keep waiting for the moment when she loses what’s left, when her finally shred of dignity peels away, and nothing remains but her pain. Because Kora is descended from Tritus the Mad, a dragon so insane that he gleefully dissected an entire race of dragons just to see how their brains worked. This same man created giant mechanisms and placed them under his own castles for defense, worried about an enemy that didn’t exist. He also gave his favorite daughter up to be tortured and imprisoned for decades to win imperial favor, that same daughter who is now fighting so hard to not follow in his footsteps even as her trauma threatens her daily.
