Whenever he found the opportunity, he relished the chance. Kyle dove lower, aiming right for the town square, not far from the church, hoping that his sudden and dramatic landing would stir up some activity, perhaps even flesh Caitlin out. If that despicable little girl was here, he wanted to waste no time in catching her. He was already itching to go back to the 21st century, to continuing his war, and to be done with this petty little distraction.

The last seven days have been the most productive in my whole artistic life, and it’s because there’s an imaginary clock ticking down in my brain. “I don’t mind,” Kyle tells the sink, swirling his fingers in the hot water as bubbles fill the plastic tub. Without a word, he rose and strode out of the room. His men fell silent mid-sentence. No one dared to ask questions, let alone stop him, they simply moved out of his path, heads lowered. He moved down the corridor, turned left, and entered a side room no one else used. It was small, silent, lined with monitors; his private surveillance hub.

Where the hell was Kyle? He should’ve come upstairs by now. I left the table ages ago, and I didn’t even hear the stairs creak once. Not even a whisper of his footsteps. I waited, thinking maybe he was getting extra dessert or hiding in the kitchen to avoid me. That wouldn’t be new. But the longer the silence stretched, the more this uneasy itch crawled beneath my skin. Still licking absently, I swiped away from social media and back to my gallery.
