The Cold Compromise
Every now and then, Luca glanced back to make sure he was still upright.
“You’re getting slower,” Luca muttered once, trying for humour.
“So are you,” Ethan replied. “Let’s call it bonding.”
They kept going, following narrow trails and half-visible ridges until the mountain slowly widened into a long valley. The sun dipped behind the peaks, taking most of the warmth with it. By the time they reached the valley floor, the light had faded to a soft blue-grey.
A weathered sign pointed them toward a lonely, twisting road far ahead.
“Route Napoléon,” Luca said. “Straight to the French coast.”
