I scanned the store, not because I cared for the lavish goods on display, but to avoid his piercing eyes. That’s when it caught my attention—a small, ancient book nestled in a glass case at the back of the store. Its cover was worn, its edges were frayed, but something about it called to me.
“That,” I said, pointing to the book.
Sylvia’s eyes narrowed. “That old thing? Really?”
Before I could respond, she marched to the case and snatched the book from the clerk’s hands. “I’ll take this,” she declared loudly, as though she had won a competition with me that only her was competing. “In fact, I’ll pay double for it.”
