### The Weight of Leadership Caden stood at the edge of the pack's den, the dusk air cool against his ruffled fur, his silhouette framed by the fading light. He gazed out over the assembly of wolves that had come to represent not just a group, but his family—a collective that now rested upon his shoulders like a heavy mantle. He’s respected and feared in and around most wolves and humans. Alpha Kent has the second largest pack, Blue Meadow, or he did before he took over leadership. From the whispers I’ve heard, his love of gambling has practically bankrupted his pack, forcing him to sell off his security company and parts of their territory. Members have been leaving in droves and those still there haven’t said it outright but have implied that he is abusive.

“With time, you’ll understand how this world truly works.” I managed a small smile. “So you’re the boss, that’s why they call you Alpha?” He grinned, his eyes glinting with arrogance. “Yes. In every wolf pack, the Alpha is the leader, the strongest and most feared. That’s me.” I nodded faintly, my heart pounding. “Then who’s Luna?” I asked carefully. “I’ve read enough wolf-pack fiction to know the hierarchy, Alpha, Luna, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and so on.”

They’re the eyes and ears of our pack, tasked with gathering information and patrolling our boundaries. He wasn't an Alpha, I would have been able to sense that if he had been, but I knew he was most likely a Beta or a Delta, one of the Alpha's second or third in command. The Alphas were the strongest of any wolf pack, they were also the highest and purest of any bloodline, a position which they were born it. He glanced at me. "I used to think everyone had what we had here. Then I got old enough to understand the wolf world and realized most packs don't." He paused. "Most are built on dominance and fear. It didn't take long before we recognised him and the manager also recognised him. "He's from our pack. I didn't think he would do it but we can check," the manager says and he calls the owner of the club as he is leading us to the pack. We are taken to their alpha who is a middle aged man my father's age. We exchange pleasantries and after that I tell him the reason why we are there. As wolf packs, we like to maintain our peace. Alphas respect other alphas and we look for middle grounds when we have disagreements before going directly to war.
