“It’s a umbrella for you. Butterfly wings are big enough to keep out the rain.” Jenny took the piece of paper in her hands. The paper made a “rustling” sound as it moved between her fingers. The crayon colors left marks on her fingerprints—pink, blue, brown, green—standing out sharply against her pale skin. She looked down at the butterfly. Its wings were pink, with asymmetrical patterns: three dots on the left wing and two on the right. The butterfly’s body was brown, and its antennae were blue, bending to form two question-mark-shaped arcs on the paper.

Still catching her breath—but not from the dance. His fingers trailed down her arm, stopping just before her wrist. “Keep it up, and maybe we won’t have any more problems.” There was always a threat buried beneath the praise. Sweet words with a blade behind them. He stepped back, lighting a cigarette as he turned to leave. Smoke curled in the air as he disappeared down the hall. Raven exhaled, finally. Alone again. … The hallway was dim—quiet, but not peaceful. Raven moved silently, clutching a small, folded piece of paper in her hand—something she was supposed to give Riko. Her steps slowed as she neared his door, half-open, light leaking through the gap.

It was beautiful, he could only wonder what the fairy looked like who they wings belonged to. “Wow that’s amazing” Seb couldn’t shake his shocked state. He knew about vampires and witches but not any other creatures of the night.

Lindsay said. “Yeah, good idea,” Wren answered. They quickly walked back to the car and got in. Lindsay went a step further and locked the doors. They sat and watched for a few minutes before they saw it again over the trees by the creek. Lindsay grabbed the binoculars from the glove compartment and watched it more closely. She could see the wings were feathered and had an almost iridescent sheen. The fur was completely smooth and glistened in the sun. She handed the binoculars to Wren. He took them without saying a word and began to watch it as it slowly moved above the trees.

What got our attention, was the most prominent feature in the woman’s body…it was the pair of wings at her back…scaly wings usually found in flies. “Fae…” Krimson whispered almost absentmindedly…and everything changed from that moment onwards.

The dome formed around me, sending him back to the ground. “They are under my protection. You can’t harm them.” Liana said, appearing before me. A pair of beautiful, large, translucent, glowing wings were on her back. They had an intricate vine-like design on them with a little motif of clovers, like the mark she had given me on my wrist. They looked fragile, like they would break at the slightest touch, but they also looked sturdy enough that they could cut through diamonds.

They were also Raven Shifters, making them even more special in the Fafner Kingdom since 90% of our country's inhabitants hand four legs and no wings. I raised my hand and gathered a small amount of warmth around my palm and fingers, creating a thin glove of flames that I pressed against my brother. I splayed my fingers and wiggled them through his fur, adding a little pressure when I finally reached the roots and the heat of his skin. Staring at the dancing flames that harmlessly brushed by his dark brown pelt, I focused on my connection to my twin, envisioning a bridge in my mind that connected me to him.

"Extend your right wing please." Tove's wing shot out. We ducked as it created a canopy that was almost the full size of our living room. Drace hunched under the wing with us. "Now, wings are very sensitive. They have to be for flying. We need to know how the air is moving in order for us to do what we need to do in order to stay in the air." She ran her fingertips over the inside of Tove's wing. It shuddered the slightest degree as his voice ran through our minds. Sacred stars, that feels amazing. Tove's voice was full of wonder.

The wings had a refined incurvation and were adorned with heart-shaped disc flowers with sweet-like petals and colours ranging from soft purples, pink, yellows, and blues.
