Becky picked up the small bowl and examined it. “I think this was once a shell of some sort. Like a mussel or oyster shell, but look at the size of it. It must have been old when they harvested this.” Gemma set the twig on the desktop and then pulled the book out. For its size, the book was thick. A little larger than a man’s hand, and perhaps as thick as three of Gemma’s fingers. They did not make the book from paper, but the pages were much thicker. “Is this skin? The witch was arriving soon, and everything needed to be in place. As I turned to grab a chair, my eyes landed on her satchel. It sat there innocently, draped over her shoulder. Curiosity gnawed at me, and before I could stop myself, I reached for it. What could she possibly need to carry everywhere? I opened the bag, and my hand froze when I pulled out a thick, leather-bound book. My pulse quickened as I flipped it open, my eyes scanning the symbols and spells scrawled across the pages.

Then I looked around some more and picked up Floca’s Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11, Lewis’s The Wolf, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Dahl’s Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and a few others. I paused at the Harry Potter series, but while the girls were old enough, being werewolves, for the story, I knew the sizes of the books would put them off. Next year, I thought. They’d have handled textbooks by then and wouldn’t be so rapidly opposed to books an inch thick or more.
