Then the chains began to move on their own.
The thick black iron links that wrapped around the object slid toward the edges of the table like snakes stretching. It was pure dark magic, pulsing with a twisted, hungry will. Beneath the fallen chains, a short staff was revealed, barely the size of a human forearm. It was carved from wood so petrified it looked like pumice, crisscrossed with red veins that glowed rhythmically like arteries pumping diseased blood. At the tip, an irregular obsidian blade pulsed.
