My voice did not shake. The man tilted his head. He didn't have a face, just a shifting darkness where his features should be. "You can call me the Reader," he said. His voice sounded like paper rubbing together. "I am the one who pays for the ink. I am the one who decides if your story ends here or keeps going." Bryan stepped in front of me, his hand on his pistol. "He’s another code, Hazel. Don’t listen to him." The Reader laughed. It was a dry, thin sound. "A copy thinks he has a choice. How cute."

She came back way sooner than expected. "I've been wanting to read this one," she shared in a small voice, shrugging her shoulders while walking back to the couch. Just as she sat down with finesse, held out the book with both hands, and carefully opened it, letting the pages cascade smoothly like it was some treasured family heirloom, and that was when he read the title he was aching to recall. Of course! "The Imperial Serenade," he mumbled the title out loud. "By the Lancaster Maureen Ethereal," Carylle continued with satisfaction. "I've been dying to read this since back then. My former co-workers have been talking about it a lot."

He carefully placed the little boy's head on the bed, he adjusted the bed covers gently before throwing an annoyed glare at the Beta and Gamma before leaving the room. " Ohh..that was so close." Cole said, dramatically breathing heavily. " Dumb head!" Xander scoffed, picking a magazine. Cole gave him an hard smack on his head before taking a glance at the magazine xander held. The latter was just opening the pages without going through the contents of each page. " Damn, this human girls are quite hot." Cole whistled like a playboy he was. " Fool, our girls are way more hotter than them." Xander replied, without taking his eyes from the magazine.

And Cole startled out of a not-quite-daydream to find a…well, there was no nice way to say it, a twitchy, rat-like man in a leather jacket taking photos of them from the other side of the street. "Who's this, Ellie?” he called out. “A friend,” she threw back. “Now fuck off.” “Aren’t you going to introduce me?” “Oh suuure. This is Billy Boyle, an independent photojournalist. And this”—she flapped a laconic hand in Cole’s direction—“is none of your fucking business.” “You know I’ll find out anyway.” “And you know I’ll set your car on fire.” “I love it when you get feisty.” He gave a frankly creepy shiver.

And drug both himself and JD across the slick floor. Cooper sat down on the couch and picked up the Omega-verse paperback romance novel that was on the cushion. He knew the author and had several of their books on his e-reader. Not that he would admit that. Unknown to most, he had two e-readers, the one that he read around everyone else, and the one that he read in the privacy of his small apartment. “This yours?” He asked Dean as he held up the book so she could see it. “Technically, it’s Cheryl’s. I already finished it. Is the bookmark blue or green?” Dean replied as she and JD worked on the sandwiches.

Cole Xander stirred his espresso and suddenly nudged my arm. “Do you know her?” he asked. I didn’t respond right away, my gaze still fixed on the scene unfolding before me. Xander let out a low chuckle. "Damn, Cole. I’ve never seen you look at a woman like that before. No matter how beautiful she is, you don’t have to keep staring.” His eyes narrowed playfully. “When did you start taking an interest in anything other than business?"

I cried even as I raged inside, making fists around the fabric of his T-shirt while my demon howled and Shaylee softly wept. So. Not. Fair. When I pulled away at last, snuffling, I accepted the wad of tissues Liam shoved into my hands. I blew my nose noisily before dropping into the seat Sassy vacated. I scooted sideways and retrieved the book he'd been reading, not wanting to damage it, especially after how kind Liam was being. Wouldn't do to ruin one of his prized books. The red cover of the demon raising tome felt odd in my hands. It was only then, staring down at the fine pores in the texture of the material I really knew what I was holding.
