Best Haunted House Books 소설 & 이야기

EMILY I sat still on the couch, hugging myself as if that could chase away the feeling of fear that wouldn’t stop crawling over my skin. The dark had a way of making your thoughts louder, your heart beating faster, and your mind believing anything was possible. The entire house was dead silent, apart from the faint ticking of the wall clock. And then, snap. The power cut off completely. I jumped to my feet. “Kent?” He was already up, phone in one hand, his other hand reaching for the drawer where he kept a flashlight. “It’s the whole street,” he said, peeking out the window. “It’s not just here.”

She opened it—pages parting easily now, as though the book recognized her exhaustion and offered no resistance. She flipped past the early chapters she had already memorized. Deeper. To the sections she had only skimmed before, too afraid to linger. *Control of the Undead* The script here was denser, colder. Diagrams of binding circles, sigils of domination, lists of names for the restless dead. Zombies—simple thralls of flesh, bound by will alone. Ghouls—carrion-eaters, drawn by hunger, controlled through offerings of meat and bone.

Not just words spilling out this time. Scenes. Creatures. Hazards. One thick volume labeled CASTLE HAZARDS struck a stone, flipped open, and vomited a swarm of translucent, wailing shapes—castle ghosts, their eyes hollow, fingers like icicles. They shrieked and arrowed toward us in a ragged storm. Another book, NEON DRONE PATTERNS, burst against a fallen shelf. Drones extruded from the pages like wasps from a nest, metal bodies shining, eyes already lighting up with target locks.

Pieces clicked together violently inside her mind. Her mother’s warnings. The old rituals. The wards she somehow knew instinctively as a child. Even the manor itself. “Oh my gods…” The Hollow King hummed happily beneath the mountain. “Yes,” it whispered. “Now she understands.” The floor trembled again. A massive crack split through the kitchen wall this time. Black smoke poured through it. Not smoke. Shadows. Alive. The villagers outside screamed as creatures began emerging from the forest beyond the standing stones. Tall figures with glowing eyes moving unnaturally between the trees.

But the fear that had been gnawing at her for days pushed her forward. She opened the book. The first pages were cold, filled with business notes and travel schedules. But as she flipped forward, the handwriting changed—it became jagged, frantic, and deeply personal. Her eyes landed on a single sentence near the end: Some ghosts don’t stay buried because they were never dead. A chill crept down her spine, turning her blood to ice. Before she could process the words, the lights throughout the estate flickered once, buzzed, and died. The house fell into absolute, suffocating darkness.

What pushed me over the edge—my Lego sets that I'd displayed on either side of the TV had been knocked to the floor and smashed to pieces. I took a deep breath and pulled out my phone to call the police. Madison shuffled out of the master bedroom in my pajamas, looking completely at ease. "You're back so late? I haven't even had dinner. My stomach's delicate—if I get sick from this, it's on you." As if she hadn't noticed my expression, Madison grabbed my arm and dragged me to the balcony. In that cramped space sat a cheap, 1.5-meter cot—God knows where she dug up that old thing. The blanket on it was stained with some mysterious liquid.

After resting for a while, they walked around and saw a bookstore which they both agreed to enter. She was reading the back of Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen when Jacob asked her. “What do you say let’s read horror books? Like the ones we watched today?” “Eh? I’m scared. You go read first, then give me a summary, then I’ll decide. Haha!” “Roger!” as he picked The Dunwich Horror and Others by H.P. Lovecraft and IT by Stephen King. They finished book shopping, it was around three in the afternoon when Jacob invited her to go somewhere else.

Those books were older than any of the others in his office. The bottom shelf (the one he’d been searching when he’d first heard the cats playing in the hall) held his collection of horror anthologies. The famed Whispers series, edited by Stuart David Schiff, featuring the varied works of Ramsey Campbell, Stephen King, Charles Grant and so many others. The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror from England. The Shivers series, published by Cemetery Dance. Masques, Borderlands, Shadows, Stalkers, Dark Forces, October Dreams I & II, Corpse Blossoms, Horror Library Volumes 1-5, and Prime Evil. Classic horror anthologies jammed next to paperback collections of slightly lesser repute with titles to mat

His voice pulsates in excitement. At once a man appears in front of him out of no where, as soon as Benjamin opens the gates of the haunted house. "Do not go there. It is just an illusion." A man in a long coat with no limbs flying in air appeared in front of him. "It is the evil spirit which is calling you." He warned him. But Benjamin did not care for his words. On a trance he continued to walk ahead towards the mansion. "Our phones are dead. I need to call somebody for help. My wife is laying there unconscious." He points to his broken car.

At least with the trusty young librarian. “How about something scary?” I look at the mom before handing her the book we had already discussed while the child had been in class. “Is it too scary?” The girl pulls her hands back and turns to her mother. “Is just a little bit.” I place the book on the counter and wait for her to make the decision. “Or there’s a not scary one I think you’d like.” I watch amused as her forehead creases, she’s thinking hard and the smile as she takes the copy of Sam Wu is Not Afraid of Ghosts.
