I growled.
“I can help—” Eli tried to run toward me.
“No, fucking stay. Down.”
But he didn’t listen. He never did, bless him. Eli was trembling, visibly terrified yet unwilling to flee. He reached for one of the fallen knives, but his hands shook.
The assassins regrouped. Four remained upright. The leader uttered something low and guttural—not wolf language, older. I recognized fragments of the sound. A rite. A vow of blood.
One of them... the shortest, pulled from his sleeve a fluted vial. He smashed it against the floor. A screaming mist erupted from it, swirling like smoke alive, claws of vapor reaching, choking out the light.
