Lia looked at him, then at me, then back at all of us, and she said very clearly, “It is the only honest one I have.”
And I said, without looking away from her, “Then we are still not done talking.”
Rider turned his head slightly toward me, waiting, and Lia stayed seated, watching me closely, and I knew she understood what came next mattered more than everything before it.
So I asked her again, slower this time, and I held her attention when I said it.
“What happens,” I asked, “if we say no.”
And Lia looked at me and answered, very softly, “Then I will still be outside, and I already told you what that feels like.”
