Lucy cried jumping into my arms. Falling to my knees I held tightly on my baby sister, savouring the moment ,afraid that she would disappear. That none of this is real. Lucy never got the chance to be a teenager. I will never have the chance to see her grow up, to see her go to high school, to see her have her first boyfriend, have her first heartbreak or go to university. All of that was taken away not just from me but from my brothers and father as well. It was all taken away the day I came home to find mamma and Lucy dead in our living room.

My fingers swiped the cover, with two people standing in the front and words revolving around them. "What was your favourite line?"

What came after. The letters and the yellow nursery and the Tuesday morning proposal and the ice and the building of something from the wreckage. The choice and the daily choosing and what it looked like from the inside of a life that had been built deliberately rather than fallen into. The specific texture of being inside a good life that had cost something to get to and was better for the cost. The three chapters were the damage. The book needed to be the whole thing. I sat at the table for a while.

"Zoe!" Caleb's voice trembled with fear and panic. As my consciousness faded, I felt no fear, only a strange sense of relief. Was it finally ending? I thought I had 24 hours left. Had it come even sooner? Maybe that was better. At least I wouldn't have to suffer through the pain eating away at me anymore. "Caleb, the journal on the nightstand and the voice recording are my parting gifts to you. Please remember to take a look," I thought.
