“I was new to the city, broke, and running from a past I didn’t want to explain. And him? He was already a legend. The type of guy people whispered about, but never to his face. He had charm, connections, he had already been working for alejandro for a while. He had the kind of quiet danger that made stupid girls like me think we could fix him.”
I smiled — bitter, maybe a little wistful.
“He wasn’t some low-level dealer. He wasn’t muscle. Lorenzo ran things. Backroom deals, strip club laundering, poker nights with buy-ins that could pay rent for six months. People owed him. People feared him because of Alejandro and I guess he loved that.”
