POV EMMA BELLE The Great Stargate above the Heart-Tree did not explode or hum. It simply stepped aside. Out of the white void emerged a vessel that made the Alabaster and Jade spires look like toys. It was a single, perfect sphere of Living Light, five miles in diameter, reflecting the entire history of the North on its surface like a liquid mirror.

The silver energy was an impenetrable shield of solidified light. I walked toward the gate, my hand still outstretched. With every step, the silver pulse grew stronger, fed by the volatile power radiating from Lucian. He was the battery and I was the conduit. "The gate!" a scout screamed from above. The massive timbers of the Frost-Peak gate, reinforced with iron and ancient enchantments, began to groan. The silver light was seeping into the cracks, turning the wood brittle. I closed my fist. Shatter.

Part One Lyra The light split them. Not a light of warmth, but something raw and ancient—like moonlight bent through broken glass. Rushing towards it, she notices a small indentation on its surface that matches one of the symbols on the gate. Without hesitation, she reaches into her pocket, retrieving the Moonstone. As she places it in the indentation, a brilliant burst of light illuminates the chamber, causing the symbols on the gate to glow with an ethereal energy. The gate creaks open, revealing a path that leads to the outside world. With the danger escalating behind them, Amelia urges everyone to move swiftly. As they step through the gateway, they are greeted by a breathtaking sight.

"Gate of thee Fly, I open thee Musca!" A sudden appearance of a topaz colored light blinded Jamnia. With wings behind it's back and a head that reassembles a fly, Jamnia blinked twice to confirmed what's she's seen. "I'll deal with you later." The gigantic lad coldly summoned his own key. "Gate of thee Lizard, I summon thee Lacerta!"

"The Outer Gate connects the old universe and the new one." He pointed toward the cracking structure. "But this..." Another crack spread across its surface. "...opens somewhere else." The First Light became completely still. Liana looked at it. "You know what he's talking about." For several seconds, it said nothing. Then it answered. "The Final Gate." Silence followed. Commander Rylan looked around. "Why does every ancient door have a dramatic name?" No one laughed. He sighed. "Right. Not the time." --- The First Light approached the gate.

Thalion continued to stare at me as the Gate slung almost closed, pausing with the lip still free. Liam stepped forward, placing both hands on the Gate. "Gar Geata." With one last flash of power, it thudded shut, the sealing of it vibrating the stones beneath our feet, the light surrounding it flickering out at last. Even as it did, all of the remaining magic gathered itself into a ball of fire and slammed forcefully into Liam. He gasped, but I could tell he was okay. The transfer of power was complete and the new Gatekeeper stood before me.

I murmured. That gave me an idea. I fumbled through my bag and found the keychain flashlight, which wasn't going to be helpful, but the other side was a laser pointer. I pointed it towards a threshold in a mirror. As the light left the flashlight, the red beam became visible. It wasn't just a spot like in our world, instead, it was a path of light. "Whoa," I whispered. Then louder, I asked, "Can you see that?" Remi's image looked left and right following the red beam in front of him. "Yes! Let me follow it."
