Silent Night, Eyes Shut Tight
A foul stench filled the air, a mix of rotting meat and rust.
Beads of sweat formed on Dad's forehead, but he kept his breathing steady, pretending to be fast asleep.
The creature stayed by my father for a full minute, then slowly moved toward my mother.
The same sniffing. The same putrid smell.
Mom's body was rigid. I could see her fighting to keep from trembling.
Then, the creature came to me.
Through the sliver of my open eye, in the flickering lights, I saw its face.
It wasn't a face. It was a shattered, rotting, humanoid thing. Its eye sockets were two deep, black holes. Its nose was caved in. Its mouth was a jagged rip that stretched to its ears, revealing rows of uneven, yellowed teet
