But there are stories where even messengers of Light, beings who should deal better with temptation than we, weak humans, sometimes succumb to the power of the Darkness. There are also times when the children of the Darkness discover such feelings as love, which in turn draws them to the Light. Many times the being from Light connects with the one from Darkness, creating a beautiful, but always very sad and desperate love story - because in most cases neither Light nor Darkness want their representatives to mix with each other.

Or even one of those dark, forbidden romance books where love and ruin intertwined, something that mirrored the madness between Lucian and me. But the rows offered no such comfort. I chuckled quietly to myself. “Of course not. Lucian probably thinks romance books are a waste of time.”

There was no author, no publisher's mark, only a title embossed in ostentatious, looping cursive: A LIGHT THAT CHANGES FATE. "Seriously?" he muttered. It was a cringe-worthy title, the kind found on the bottom shelf of a bargain bookstore. Yet, it had snagged his curiosity. He cracked the cover, and a flush of heat crept up his neck. The first page was… vulgar. Profanity-laced and graphically crude. He nearly slammed it shut. What was a book like this doing in his mother's collection?

"I approve." The four of them found themselves in a blur of baby socks, pacifiers, and arguments over baby book motifs. "Unicorns or woodland creatures?" Lily asked, holding two books. "Unicorns," Helena replied. "Woodland," Brenna argued. "I think we're having the gender reveal all over again," Vandaulf grumbled. Barkley barked once—apparently casting a vote for unicorns.
