It's funny, the anime made me love the world, but the novels made me understand it. I watched first and was entertained. Then I read, and it was like getting the director's commentary and deleted scenes all at once. Suddenly, character actions that seemed abrupt in the anime had whole chapters of motivation behind them. It enriched the experience massively.
