The internal pins snapped with a loud metallic click. I pulled the padlock away and threw it onto the floor. I yanked the metal door open, revealing the rows of heavy black switches. "Nikolai, hurry up. The guards are turning the corner." Clara called out from the alcove. "I am dropping the main grid now." I muttered. I slammed my palm down against the primary master switch. The entire second floor went completely black. The bright gold chandeliers died instantly. The green lights inside the VIP lounge turned off, plunging the glass room into total darkness. The crystal at the top of the staff’s ignited with blinding light. Lightning cracked across the sky and thunder followed instantly. A storm erupted furiously. Rain began to fall heavily but it evaporated before touching the ground, consumed by the heat radiating from the staff. Xavier’s eyes glowed faintly. “All power answers to me, I will not fall” he declared through the storm.

"Which levers?!" Elara had crawled halfway up the incline, clinging to a bolted-down maintenance console. She squinted through the strobing red light, her heart pounding against her ribs.
