The magic had me, and I could not pull back from it. Then the ceiling broke. A large section of the glass roof gave way with a crack like a gunshot. It came apart above us and the pieces hit the floor in every direction. People screamed and ran for the walls. I dropped to my knees and covered my head. The blue light from the moonstone flickered and went out in the chaos.

Or waiting for something. I didn't look up. Not because I remembered my grandmother's warning—at that point, I had filed it away with her other senile ramblings. I didn't look up because people don't look at ceilings. Ceilings are above us. We trust them to stay there, white and flat and boring, holding up the floor of the person above us. We never look at them the way we look at walls or windows or doors. That was my mistake. I should have looked. I should have looked the first night, seen nothing, and laughed at myself. But I didn't. And by the time I wanted to look, it was too late.

"Mom, did anything get on you? You have to wipe it all off. Filthy blood is unlucky. My heart will break if bad luck sticks to you." My mother smiled indulgently, patting his head. "You and your superstitions. But at least you care about me. Not like some people who only ever think of themselves. Do they ever stop to realize that if your father and I had actually shown up, we'd be ruined—our whole family destroyed?" Ezel threw his arms around her, his eyes filling with tears. "Thank goodness you and Dad didn't come."

"The ocean stays pinned. But if the moon's gravity can't reach the earth organically..." I looked up at the high stone ceiling of the Spire. "...then we are going to build an antenna," I finished. "An antenna?" Cord grunted, pushing himself off the wall, a spark of the old blacksmith returning to his eyes. "You want to build a lightning rod for gravity?"

Adrian smiled faintly and said, “Haha, that’s good. Stick with me, and even if the sky collapses, I’ll take the brunt of it.” His words made the others feel somewhat awkward. There was a saying, “If the sky falls, don’t worry, because someone tall will hold it up,” referring to a capable person. Hearing Adrian, the two felt like burdens and fell silent, knowing that expressing their feelings might strain their bond. Adrian scanned the void, and a terrifying force surged in his hand. The violent energy pulsed wildly, and in the next moment, he clenched his fist. Inside his fist, a golden light trembled fiercely, and a “rumble” echoed as the entire world shook.

She didn’t even bother trying to dodge the falling ceiling, because nothing even came close to falling on her. She didn’t even get hit with a speck of dust. “We gotta make a run for it before the ceiling caves in on us.” Lucky said, breathing hard as she ducked behind the couch with us. “Us what the fuck you mean us. You don’t even have dust on your hands nothing is touching you. We're the only ones got dust and rocks in our hair, mouth and I'm pretty sure some is in the crack of my ass. We're the only ones who might get our stomach, on flat when we get crush by the ceiling.” Mina said barely moving her leg out of the way as a big peace of stone fell.

But the folding cot collapsed when I put all my weight on one spot. Disappointed, we put the cot back where it was in case the masked men returned. “What about the table,” I said. “It’s pretty shaky,” Anna demonstrated how the table wobbled under the slightest weight. The same ceiling is in the bathroom,” I said. “Why couldn’t we stand on the toilet to reach the ceiling?” “I think it’s our only option,” Anna replied. “Let’s try it.” She led the way into the bathroom and stepped onto the toilet seat. “I can’t quite reach the ceiling,” she groaned.

The ceiling of the building at the top where Imogen was standing was weak and could collapse at any point in time. Its cracking sounds were disturbing. It had everyone’s attention except for Imogen who was wondering why they were staring at her. She was too late to realise. The ceiling had already detached from its parts and now aiming towards Imogen. She was stunned that she couldn’t move a muscle. She was standing there and staring at the ceiling falling. She closed her eyes hopelessly, expecting what was to come. The crowd was worried but no one could jump in and save her.
