Staring At The Ceiling In The Dark Novels & Stories

Everything looked normal. Then I heard it. A soft scratching, directly above me. I looked up. I shouldn't have looked up. The ceiling was full of faces. Dozens of them. Pressed against the plaster from the other side, flattened like flowers in a book. They were all smiling. They were all watching me. And in the center, where the ceiling met the wall, was a dark opening. Something was crawling out of it. Something with too many fingers. Something with eyes that had no whites.

No, I can't. Relax, take a deep breath, think good thoughts and don't look down. There was silence among everyone, only electronic music was playing in the place. I slowly loosened my hands until I let go completely. I heard a gasp in the distance. I hadn't noticed it, but as I looked up I noticed there was no ceiling. I was just looking at the full moon and stars. And some beads of gray clouds near the moon.

Now sitting silently with his back leaning against the wall, staring up at the ceiling at the yellow bulb hanging in the middle of the room. Leaving most of the room into the total darkness, dirk all over his face along with the dried blood upon his wrist almost turned brown. The Dark Room The room was plunged into total darkness, broken only by a faint yellow light hanging from a bare bulb in the ceiling, swaying gently as if breathing alongside the anxious atmosphere. The flickering light cast dancing shadows on the bare walls, moving with every rustle in the air, as if the room itself were alive, watching and breathing beside it.

I look back to see a syringe sticking out of my bicep, but the darkness is already closing in. When I wake, I’m in a dark room, chained up and completely alone. I don’t have any idea where I am, but it smells damp and the air is very cold. Letting my head drop back, I stare up at the only source of light I can find – a flickering lightbulb hanging from the very grimey ceiling. “Well Luna.” I sigh, “I guess that was too easy after all.”

She spun around and stumbled back against the sink, her eyes drawn upward to the hole in the ceiling.

The room was steeped in silence, the kind that pressed against her ears and made her chest feel heavy. Samantha lay there, her eyes locked on the stark white ceiling. It loomed above her like a canvas begging for answers she couldn’t give. The darkness around her seemed alive, creeping into the edges of her thoughts, amplifying her confusion.

“Why is it so dark? Why aren’t the lights on?” Anna stared up at the ceiling with hollow eyes, her hands frantically feeling around. Everyone stared at Anna’s tantalizing eyes then exchanged glances with each other. They were all staggered. Some of them gazed at the brightly lit room and felt their hearts sink. “Why is everyone so silent? Nina, hurry up and turn on the lights.” Nina covered her mouth in shock. Her voice trembled as she spoke. “Anna, the lights are on! Don’t scare me!”
