Caution to the wind
The words were indistinct, carried on a breeze of tension.
Her pulse raced, her lips pursed. She slowly, gently, moved her legs, pushing them over the edge of the bed. She lifted the blanket and threw it off her, using a great deal of strength to push herself into a standing position.
Her hips and knees ached, but nothing she couldn't handle. Slowly, she approached the door, lifting her hand and wrapping it around the cool metal handle. She hesitated to open it, scared that this was all just a dream and it would end when she opened this door.
