I swing my torch toward it, and see nothing. My hand’s gone clammy on the phone, and I step back from the well. The sound comes again the minute I move the torch away. Louder, faster and stronger. But this time, it’s not comin’ for me.
The wind whips up suddenly, roaring through the bushes, rattlin’ the branches ‘til the trees groan. My torch beam catches a scatter of leaves at the roots of the trees, and my chest loosens a bit. “Phew, it’s just the wind—”
