We ate our picnic and watched the clouds drift by. "I love this," Lily said. "I love being here with all of you." I reached over and took her hand. "We love having you here. We love having you with us." She smiled. "I never thought I would have this. A family. A home. People who love me." He sat down beside us. "You have it now. And you are never going to lose it." Lily looked at him. "Promise?" He pulled her into a hug. "I promise. You are our daughter. Forever."

He didn't expect his little wife to be so sensitive to his situation. "Do women on their periods become know-it-alls?" Arsen mocked then, trying to change the subject. Lily just gave Arsen a flat stare. "Just tell me what you want. There's no need to beat around the bush," Arsen decided. "I want you to break your promise to Papa," Lily said, slowly but firmly. "I want everyone to know that I am your wife. The wife of Arsen Sebastian Lewis."

I believed her. And that hurt worse than disbelief. Footsteps on the stairs. Lily appeared at the top, arms crossed like armor. She looked between us. “So,” she said carefully, “does this mean you’re not my sister anymore?” I crossed the room without thinking. “No,” I said. “Nothing changes that.” She studied my face, searching for truth, lies, something she could hold onto. “Promise?” “I promise.” She hugged me fast and tight, as if letting go was impossible.

My parents also came in running, and they both seemed genuinely worried as well. Their eyes landed on their granddaughter, who was just sitting there, not saying a word. “Lily kiddo, say something,” Daisy said, and Lily just looked at her. “Not Mommy, she promised me a brother, and Mommy doesn’t break her promises,” she said and started crying. “You know that, right? Mommy said she would bring me to Daddy, and she did. She never breaks her promises,” Lily added, and I nodded at this. Our daughter is right, you ever break your promises, Emma?
