The instructor continued. “Introduce yourself as though you’re addressing the kingdom.” I inhaled deeply and began: “Greetings, people of Ave......." “That tone is incorrect,” Celene interjected. “Try again.” I gave it another shot. “Wrong. Do it properly.” Again. Again. Again. My lungs felt like they were on fire. My eyes watered. My voice trembled. I heard the scribe whisper to the instructor, “She doesn’t seem strong enough for a royal address.”

Clenching her jaws tightly, Glenn took a deep breath and looked him right in the eyes before replying calmly, "Not a problem at all, Mr. Lincoln." "Good. The audition will be held two weeks from now, so I suggest you prepare everything you need to practice your acting skills for it. I hope you're prepared." Mr. Lincoln said firmly, nodding, but the minute he did, Glenn felt her anger spike and her hands shake uncontrollably.

“That’s what we’re trying to teach you.” Angela looked around the room. She closed her eyes again. This time, she concentrated. I could tell she was trying. And for once, I decided not to screw with her. At least for a few minutes. She practiced with Darius. Then Silas. Then Steph. Each time, she would focus until the person’s voice appeared, listen for a moment, and then try to push it away. It wasn’t perfect. Sometimes another voice slipped through. Sometimes she’d open her eyes suddenly because she’d caught something she hadn’t meant to hear. Once, Steph muttered that she was never thinking about anything embarrassing around Angela again.

She asked, taking a step back from Emma, her eyes not leaving her for once. Emma opened her mouth to speak, but the words were struggling at the back of her throat. She was doomed. But she had practiced, over and over. She had listened to the tapes and recordings taken during some interrogations with some workers. She knew they rolled their ‘S’ and often replaced their ‘l’ with an ‘r’ and vice versa, but could she speak clearly like them? Their voices were rather thick, hers was crisp and girly in every form.

She walked a few steps across the room, barefoot, as she flipped through the pages of the script. I waited impatiently. Then she turned to me. “Can you read with me, please?” That came out a bit shaky. She cleared her throat. “Can you read with me, please?” I blinked. “Me?” “Just the male lead lines,” she said, trying to steady her voice. “Don’t need to act. Just read. I need to hear it,so I can reply to the lines".

I answer her. "Correct. If you were to try somebody's voice that you do not know too well then you would encounter the problem of not knowing their voice well enough but in this instance it is the opposite. You know every part of him so well that you cannot peel it apart yet. Soon, you will be able to do it with his voice as well but until then, keep practicing with other people's voices." She says to me. I sit there and think for a minute about what she is saying. If that is true then maybe I would be able to hear some voices that I have not heard in a long time. Some that I thought I might never hear again.

“Alright, okay work. Cynthia, great line recall. Though, is it possible to do something to lessen the stuttering?” “Uhm…I can trrry to sss-speak slower?” “Then, let’s try repeating the lines with you doing that, alright?” “Ahh…okay…” “Alright, repeat the last line, in character.” He clapped twice again before sitting down. While the drama teacher has been out on maternity leave, he’s been the one taking the most care of everything. But she’ll be coming back for the performance, so everyone wants it to be perfect. I want it to be perfect, too, though I know that can’t happen. Perfection is unattainable. That doesn’t mean we can’t try.
