They carved toward the far tunnel, each step dragging them closer. A horn blared, deep and resonant, vibrating in the stone. The soldiers pulled back—only to part their ranks. Kaelen’s stomach turned cold. A figure stepped forward from the shadows. Not a soldier, not even fully human. Armor black as night clung to its form, helm shaped like a wolf’s skull. A greatblade rested across its shoulders, runes glowing faintly along the steel. The air itself seemed to recoil from it. Mira whispered, “A deathknight.”

Silver light flashed sharply through the darkness as he swung toward the creature. The Hollow One vanished before the blade connected and the candles blew out. Darkness swallowed the room completely. I screamed. Something cold brushed against my arm. I stumbled backward blindly, panic crashing through me as unseen movement surrounded us from every direction. Then pale light burst suddenly through the darkness. My spirit guide stood in the center of the room, glowing symbols circling his hand like fire. The Hollow One now crouched on the ceiling above him watching and waiting. Dear God, i whispered. It moved upside down like some horrible spider, its claws digging into the wood effortlessly.

He was immovable. "Mommy, the stones are singing," Caleb whispered. His voice wasn't childish anymore. It was ancient. "They’re so hungry. They’ve been hungry for a hundred years." One of the Hollowed leaped from the wall. Zack intercepted it mid-air, his jaws snapping shut on the creature's throat, but as it scattered into mist, two more latched onto his wounded side. Zack let out a pained roar, collapsing. "Zack!" I screamed. "Colin, the lighter!" I barked.

He wasted no time weaving through the mass of spirits as he barreled across the charred ground to the mess house. Roy braved a look in Angel’s direction. Jackson was right. She was getting uncomfortably close and the spirits that had proven themselves lethal by tearing Harold into pieces only to become like zombies were acting a bit more animated. “Did ya make that change in the spirits? Is it yer magic that’s keeping them calm?”

The others wait behind me in breathless silence. I can feel their tension like a physical thing. Caelan is the only one who steps forward, positioning himself beside me without hesitation. His palm brushes mine, and the contact sends electricity up my arm. A shape begins to form from the ash and shadow. He’s taller than I remember from my dreams. Cloaked in bones that gleam like polished ivory, crowned with antlers that drip with silver moss like tears, the Hollow King emerges from the veil between worlds. His eyes are empty sockets that should hold nothing but darkness.
