Every instinct inside me screamed. It moved impossibly fast. Kael shoved me aside just as the creature lunged, a blade of black energy slashing through the space where my throat had been seconds earlier. I hit the ground hard, pain exploding through my shoulder. Kael drew a dagger from beneath his cloak, meeting the creature head-on. Steel clashed against shadow. The sound rang through the forest. “What is that thing?!” I shouted. Kael ducked another strike. “A Hollow.” “A what?!” “They hunt Guardians.”

"As a noble, I fear nothing!" The moment they stepped inside, a life-sized animatronic ghost knight lunged toward them with glowing red eyes. "DEATH AWAITS YOU!" The entire noble entourage screamed in terror. One knight dropped his sword. Another noble tried to cast a warding spell, only for it to do absolutely nothing against the pre-programmed horror effects. Meanwhile, a group of Aeternums kids walked past them, completely unfazed. "It’s just an illusion, my lord," a child whispered to the trembling duke.

Skylar stopped smiling and said coldly, "Oh, it's you. Did you get it?" Three days ago, Skylar forcibly fed the Soul-devouring Bloodworm to Neil and his girlfriend, and then ordered him to steal the ghost token for him. It was the reason Skylar remained in Mid City. "Yes." Neil took out a black-colored token and passed it to Skylar. The token seemed to be made of a material similar to jade and was emitting a cold aura. It was none other than the ghost token. A smile broke out of Skylar's face as he took the ghost token. "Well done. I was right to choose you for the task," he said. Then he waved his hand dismissively and said, "You can leave now."

Now, only power spoke. Gloria knelt first, laying a talon-shaped blade across her knees. Its hilt was carved from bone that pulsed faintly in the darkness, like a heartbeat echoing through the ground. The air grew colder around her, coiling like serpents, and her lips moved without sound. The frost crawling along her skin wasn’t entirely natural; it was the blade calling to her, the spirits whispering their obedience.

It all seemed to be going well, and that the battle would be over shortly. A few of the mounted Knights were taken down by the Alva’himar, but with sheer numbers – and the aid of the Minotaurs – several of the Mages were overcome. As the Knights clashed with the Goblin ranks, however, they encountered something unexpected. The first Knight riding into the fray swung hard at the nearest Goblin, who raised his own blade in defense. When they met, not only was his blow deflected, but his Khortaal was broken. I worry not about snakes, roaches, or any winged insect that would suddenly fly into me. All I could my attention was the presence prowling through the corner. I could feel him. He doesn’t even bother to silence his footsteps, following closely behind me. “What now? Aren’t you going to tell me who my phantom is?” I gibed, pivoting on my heels so quickly, hoping to catch a glimpse of him, but I met none.

How in the name of the beloved Goddess am I still alive? I wanted to curl up and slip into death like the other people, but then the sound of the horses grew louder. Instinctively I dived below the table we dined on only minutes ago, and tried to listen in on the people approaching. The sound of the horses stopped as the people arrived at the scene, and there was silence for a while. Then someone spoke up. "Well, well. It seems it worked." The voice sounded familiar: too familiar, it made my skin crawl.

When we separated, he whispered: "Come back to me." "I will." The chamber doors finally broke. A wave of darkness poured inside. The warriors raised their weapons. But the creature didn't attack. It stopped. It looked at me. I couldn't see its face. Only two pale eyes beneath a hood of shadow. Everyone froze. The Hollow lowered itself. And knelt. My mother gasped. Gabriel whispered: "Impossible." I stepped forward. The creature lowered its head further. I heard the voice again.

The trees blurred past us, their branches clawing at the night like skeletal fingers. His boots struck the earth in a hard, deliberate rhythm, his body straining with every step. “You can hate me later,” he growled, his voice low and jagged, “but if I drop you now, you’ll collapse and the Hollow will have you.” The Hollow stirred at its name, as if he had summoned it. Laughter slithered through my veins, a hiss curling around my ribs, pressing into my lungs. My body twitched against Kael’s hold. My shadow rippled along the ground, stretching longer than his, longer than mine, white eyes flashing in the dark.

He was shirtless, but at least he had shorts on. Nick threw Drago a pair of camo shorts, and he quickly slipped them on. “Surrounded by dragons,” she smiled in amazement. Grigo and Marcu stepped forward with black and gray wings spread out. All their wings spun six feet across, and Madchen could see their talons protruding from their fingertips . Madchen couldn’t find any words, instead she stared, mouth agape. They were magnificent, all of them, and she couldn’t tear her eyes away.
