I roughly released her neck. “I..I..I am sorry..”she stuttered. Mustering all the energy she could,Lisa pushed me and tried to run to the door.

For an hour, Mia almost forgot there was a war. A little girl tugged on her sleeve. "Miss Mia." She knelt down. "Yes?" The little girl held up a drawing. A stick figure with black hair standing beside another taller figure. "That's you and your husband." Mia smiled. "And who's this tiny one?" "Me." "You made me prettier than I really am." The girl giggled. "No. Uncle Mark looks scary, so I had to make you pretty." Even Mia laughed. Across the hallway, Mark pretended not to hear.

His blue eyes—so like Dominic's—sparkled with excitement as he held up a picture he’d drawn. “Look, Lila! It’s you and me and Winnie! We’re playing outside!” He beamed, showing her the carefully scribbled crayon figures. The three of them were stick figures in a field of green, their arms outstretched toward the sky. Winnie giggled and pointed at her own character. “I’m flying! Aaron says I can fly!”

The gold embroidery shimmered beneath the crystal chandelier. No creepy portraits lined the room. Thank goodness for that.
