By the time they made it back to the cabin, the light outside had shifted to the pale gold of late afternoon. Anthony left the door open, letting in the faint sound of the waterfall and the cool breeze that carried the scent of wet stone. Lila sank onto the bed, kicking off her shoes and curling her legs beneath her. The quilt beneath her was worn and soft, stitched from faded fabric squares that looked like they’d been passed down through generations. She ran her fingers over the seams, wondering how many stories had been woven into them.

The bedding is simple white sheets. Once her shoes are on, she grabs her now perfectly folded quilt and puts it on the foot of the bed. It’s the only colourful thing in the room. The quilt had been a present from one of her aunts; it’s a patchwork of squares in every colour, with a dark blue border. It has stitching covering it in intricate swirls. On the left side of the bed, there is a closet and a side table, and the room is accented with indoor plants. I already know what this family is addicted to steak and chandeliers.

The dark riven slate floor tiles have a blue sheen that is almost like the veins in marble are a perfect contrast to the whitewashed wooden walls and ceiling. It is one of the smaller cabins, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm. Whoever decorated this house, had a quirky personality. There is a handmade quilted blanket hanging on the wall, which has images of wolves, trees, and the moon stitched in rich primary colours. Downstairs there is an open plan layout, with a sitting area, dining table and a contemporary kitchen along one wall. I can’t believe how different it is from my minimalistic apartment.
