in bed. An hour later the city gave way to dusty two-lane roads lined with scrub brush. A hand-painted sign on the side of the highway caught my eye: RIVERBEND BIKE RALLY – 2 MILES. Music thumped in the distance, deep bass and the roar of engines. I almost kept driving. But something in my chest flipped,a reckless little spark I hadn’t felt in years. I turned.

"But for the most part, they'll be interested in their natural prey, not a person. It's the bugs you'll want to watch out for." Jaylee nodded. She had bug spray, but was resigned to a few mosquito bites all the same. They came to Black River itself, and she grabbed for her camera. The river got its name not from the color of the water, but from the way it reflected the towering black cliffs on either side. The sun dazzle made it look like a spill of diamonds on black velvet. "You should see it in the moonlight," Rommie said. "Moon's full tomorrow night." ** Jaylee spent the next day out in the woods, shooting roll after roll of film and arguing with herself.

he asked, pulling her closer. “Like a dream come true!” They reached New London, and it took them almost fifteen minutes to reach the little village of Mystic. It was late afternoon and Alexander showed her the expansive, shimmering Mystic River as they drove along its shore. “That’s the Mystic River Bascule Bridge. Isn’t it magnificent?” asked Alexander. Eva gaped at the bascule bridge, having never seen something like that before. “Yes. Will we get time to explore?”

Anything. The darkness of night slowly shifted to a bright morning, the briny tang of the river strong as the morning breeze blew across the water, small ripples of waves smacking the boulders that lined the shore. Early morning fishermen arrived, taking up their favorite spots and casting out into the calm river as pelicans perched nearby hoping for castoffs. The homeless stirred from where they hid among the bushes along the river, wandering away to wherever they knew a free meal awaited them. Morning traffic buzzed over the Harbor City Causeway as people travelled to work, buses intermingled among them hauling disinterested children to school and away from the game consoles, everyone blis

If so, Zephyr Khan was really in danger! "Boom!" In the sky, The long river, which was tens of thousands of feet long, slowly surged. The long river showed a white jade-like light, like a white jade river. As it flowed, the jade-like light flashed with a tearing aura. Even at a glance, one could feel a strong pain in his eyes. One could imagine how amazing the power in the long river was. The long river connected as if it was flowing between the stars and heaven. As it fluttered, a pair of huge white wings slowly hung down.

It was still murky from the aftermath of our battle. “We’re here!” one of the Green Bit scouts cried. We got back to the river where we first crossed. “Listen up.” Chief Bess got everybody’s attention. “Rockflower is two hours away, and we got five hours of burning daylight. We haven’t had a proper bath in two days. Let’s —” “Beach party!” someone shouted. Many burst into cheers. A beach party by the river. River Black River held the candelabra in her hand, holding it aloft, looking around the huge room. It was so big, it dwarfed her living room back at her parents’ house. Everything was draped in white cloth and for a moment, she felt lost in that room too. It had no windwos and seemed to be below ground, in a basement level, though she wasn’t entirely sure. It had been a disorientating walk in the dark mansion. River hoped it was nicer during the day. Less confusing. In truth, she hoped that when she woke up, she’d be inside her tent, safe and sound and all this would be a strange dream.

Jamie had fully recovered from her ordeal and had spent time in either the Royal Kennels or Stables. The Capital itself was huge! Riversmeet was built around the meeting of two rivers: The River Strong and The Blackwell. The Blackwell had dark peaty water from the highlands of Riverswell. This created a dramatic effect when mixed with the light waters of The River Strong.

River P.O.V. The old brick foundry squats by the river like a rusted animal, belly full of shadows and pigeons, every arch a patient mouth. Wind comes upriver cold and clean; it knifes the oil stink down to something I can use; hot engine, old mortar, fear-sweat. I’m on the bridge edge with three teams and a map in my head. “A-Team anchor north arch,” I ordered, voice low. “B-Team drift south by the spillway. C-Team with me, high wire. No heroics. Eyes only until we get the green light from Alpha.”
