He was lying face down, and face up, all at once. I live in that house now. I am the village "fixer." And every night, I listen to the scratching beneath the floorboards. I don't fear the ones that crawl. I fear the ones that wait. Because now I know that the most terrifying thing in the world isn't death—it’s a corpse that refuses to close its eyes.

But still, my eyelids are absolutely reluctant to close. As I lay there staring blankly at the ceiling, I suddenly remembered Javier’s collection of horror books. That’s right. A while back, I’d idly picked up one of his scary stories. Since I’m actually a scaredy-cat, every time I read one of those horror stories, I’d immediately be scared out of my wits and end up falling asleep from emotional exhaustion.

Which is why I haven’t been using it ever since I started writing 1001 Dark Tales. Yes, I could have written it quicker, but 1001 Dark Tales are dark romance tales. I’m not ashamed of anything I write, but I would rather not act out the scenes with three males who I don’t even know their names or what they look like. I push those thoughts away as I put the quill down and grabbed my other manuscripts, leafing through them. Each of them was only partly done and would benefit from using the quill on them. Before I could pull one out, though, I heard a knock at my door.

“Gem!” She dashed through each room, her heart pounding in her chest until she finally stumbled upon the horrifying scene. There lay Gem, lifeless, in a pool of blood, and her holes destroyed. It was the same as Mike and Reed. Before Red could take the next breath, the haunted mansion vanished along with her friends' dead bodies, leaving her frozen and gasping for breath. With the help of a passerby, she was able to return home. As soon as she got there, she told her mother about her pregnancy, and before her father got back from work, they escaped Hamlet together.

Birdy nodded in agreement, "It is time for the ghost stories to begin and be spread. Stories of a pack of wolves that live nowhere but everywhere, who rescue the weak, broken, and unchampioned, taking those they rescue away with them and disappearing with no clues to who they are or where they came from." ​Three gods and one vampire nodded in agreement. "Let the fun begin. Go lay the groundwork to make the stories true when our wolves awake," Hyperion ordered. ​Cronos snickered, "This is going to be so much fun. I am glad Gaia is letting me loose to help lend credence to the stories." ​"What good are the stories without those needed to make them come true?" Bob wondered out loud.

Her sleep was dreamless until she entered the wolf's hour, inviting her deepest fears back into her mind—the hour between night and dawn when most people die, sleep is the most profound, and nightmares are the most real. Minnow was back in the playground, lying on the wet slimy nature floor. A man was moving his heavy body on top of her suffocating her with his weight. The stranger grunted and moaned in her ear, leaving the side of her face warm and damp from his laboured breaths in the cold night air. Her sex burned like a sharp glowing iron mercilessly and endlessly pierced it. Her core stretched and ripped apart from the ruthless thrust from the man's firm hips.

One of these—a creative writing assignment to write a horror story—proves to be just the jackpot we were looking for. In a nutshell, his story is about a guy infatuated with the high school cheerleader, whom he proceeds to stalk obsessively; camping out in a tree behind her house so he can watch her through her bedroom window, breaking into the house when no one is there so he can go through her sock drawer (yes, her sock drawer . . . this kid is more messed up than I realized), and otherwise just acting like a total creep.
