Her lack of confidence had convinced her. She dressed herself in a white robe with a huge hood. A silver ribbon was wrapped around her waist, and the veil was securely tied at the back of her head. Leila would be disguised as a silver servant. No one would pay any attention to her tonight, not at the crowded and boisterous carnival.

I like it’’ He said with a grin and I blushed to the root of my hair and he chuckled. I looked around at everything. It looked almost quite normal and not what you’d expect the underworld to look like. There was a valley below the mountain with lush grass that was different shades of purple instead of the green of the earth with blue, pink, red, and black wildflowers spread across the entire valley. The river water was bright orange, almost like lava, instead of blue, which I think is a result of the sky reflecting in the water. In the sky, there was no sun or moon but it was bright orange with yellow and gray clouds. It was truly beautiful.

The overlay’s sleeves run the length of my arms and the entire piece features pearl and glass beads that shimmer ever so slightly when I move. Tatiana adds another pin to the elaborate updo created by the stylists who came in earlier. It's studded with beads matching those on the lace, and it makes me feel regal.Me. Regal. “I swear, I keep thinking I'm going to wake up and this will all have been a dream,” I confess as she inserts the comb attached to a short, lace veil.

I moved swiftly, thinking of what I was going to wear and smiled to myself when I saw a beautiful flowing white gown that cascaded down my body like a river of moonlight. The delicate fabric hugged my curves, symbolizing purity and submission. Something that Sheila could never have or be. I fastened the clasps, my fingers trembling as the metal clicked into place and I winced a bit as I had picked myself in the process. Next, the veil. I would never forget that even if the entire world was ending. Thanks to Caleb, I had a variety of veils to pick from so I selected a shiny black veil that had sparkles on it and pinned it to my hair.

Only a name, soft as breath, sharp as longing, passed from one to the next like a forbidden secret: Seren. They did not wear armor. They wore veils, every colour borrowed from the palette of loss: ember-grey, soot-black, blind-silver, bloodless red. Each veil was heavy with meaning. Some stitched with runes, the sigils of kin lost to fire or frost. Some bore only a blank square, unadorned—grief without a name. Others were cut from remnants of banners, repurposed as reminders that the old world was gone.

Because the veil had thinned. And it would not hold forever.

After Sarah checked the fit, she smiled, “This is so you. I know you like simple everything, and I knew if you saw this one, it would be perfect. I have the perfect veil too.” She left the room and Queen Lori found her voice, “Sebastian is going to love that dress. It’s simple, but gorgeous. You two are perfect for each other.” I smiled, “Thank you.” Sarah returned with a veil that was very simple with only small, embroidered flowers edging the bottom of it and small hair combs to attach it into my hair. I smiled as a tear fell from my eye, “This is perfect.” Sarah smiled, “I knew this design would be perfect.”

Leila stood in front of the full-length mirror, the delicate ivory fabric of her wedding gown cascading in perfect folds around her. Her fingers trembled slightly as she adjusted the edge of her veil, but Vera was already there, steadying it with calm hands. “You look perfect,” Vera said quietly, securing the final pin in place at the crown of Leila’s dark hair. “Like something out of a dream.” Leila let out a breathless laugh, her eyes gleaming with emotion. “I feel like I might throw up.”

At 7:30 AM, Veil was up and preparing for a 9:00 clock interview. She had her shower, made breakfast, ate, and used the rest of the free minutes taking in deep breaths. Once it was 8:20 AM, she dressed up. In a white polyester V-neck long-sleeved shirt, a knee-length black skirt that accentuated her perfectly defined curves, and a pair of heels, she looked almost ready to rock. What was she missing...

Smoothing down the dark emerald silk, Liviana takes a deep breath, admiring the way it hugs her figure through the reflection of her mirror. "You look great." Violet compliments from behind, flashing her a smile through the glass. Liviana spins around to return the gesture and compliment, complimenting the lavender dress her blonde friend wears. "You look amazing, Violet. Purple really suits you." She says, and Violet smiles. "Thank you." Violet smiles. "Alright," Leona starts, rounding through the door with her heels clicking loudly, her blue velvet dress dragging on the floor behind her. "How are we doing in here? Are we ready?"
