I turned to the first page and began to read. The first half of the book was mainly about the day-to-day life of the early days of the kingdoms. "We're the living energy sources Robbie. The Holders of the rings, it's us… all of us." She watched as Robert took a closer look at every detail the pictorial book had to offer. Every marking, every idea, every memory the pictures conjured. "Looks like you’ve been doing a lot research.” He then took a closer look at the book and saw a couple contacts with their numbers just beside them, on a different page of the book. “You’ve been trying to find them too huh” he said, everything gradually starting to make a little more sense now. “Well you’re on the right path. We do need to find them. All of us. We need to–"

The heavy journal slammed shut on the table as Dane and Ezra added the final lines in their final years. "This full story goes to the academy library today," Dane declared. Ezra looked at the thick pages with pride. "Every battle, every laugh, every quiet night. Our legacy for those who come after." Mira arrived first, excited. "The new leaders wait to receive it. But first tell us some pieces. We want to hear you two talk it through." Jaxson followed close behind. "This book will guide generations. Share the heart of it with us now."

He looked up. "I've been thinking about why they'd write it that way." She kept her voice academic. Analytical. The register she used for texts. "The anchor law is twelve hundred years old. Whoever wrote it understood something about a vampire ruler taking on a human bond that the formal succession framework doesn't acknowledge." She paused. "I think they understood it could become real." "Yes," he said. One word. No elaboration. His jaw even, his hands still, the immediate stillness that meant the serious thing.

For some reason it occurred to me that the war in the city was unavoidable, but would it be outside the city? Under Boris, the mayor was a servant, after his death he felt freedom, and having received a casino, he tasted power and real money, and wanted more, but he was only a man, and a man would never be allowed to stand above the wolves. To do this, he might need Boris's brother, who was so conveniently also a half-breed, under the guise of instability, quite capable of inciting other half-breeds, oppressed by wolves, to fight for rights and make the city his own.
