Needy screamed, pointing her finger at me like a gun. I swallowed hard and felt my tears burn even hotter. Needy stormed off and out of the room, screaming as she moved down the hall. I wanted to collapse on the floor. I couldn’t believe all of that had just happened. I couldn’t believe I had lost one of my best friends. I couldn’t think of anything that would fix it or get her to forgive me. “Well, that was intense,” my mother finally said with awkward laughter. She shoved her hands in her pockets and bounced on her eyes. Scott looked at her with a murderous expression.

There was nothing I missed about the years I’d shared with Maria Clara. Something inside me said we had already given everything. That we were spent. But the woman I truly missed... that one, I could never confess. Our friendship would end right there. "Maybe it is..." I lied, downing the whiskey in a single gulp.

To press gentle kisses to your lips. It is good that you aren’t here. I am not strong enough to face you yet. I don’t know if I ever will be. Our friends—are they still ours, or are they just mine or yours? I don’t know how this works. I guess it doesn’t really matter. Our friends say I’ll heal with time. I don’t think I want to, though.
