I taste the metallic tang of a thousand thousand tears, shed across a thousand worlds. I look at our hands, clasped together. I feel his love, a warm, steady current through the Graft. And beneath it… a vibration. A faint, distant echo. A woman on a dusty planet, staring at a closed door, wondering what would have happened if she’d said yes. A general, old and tired, staring at a star chart, haunted by the retreat that became a rout. A child, crying over a broken toy that was also a lost promise. Their regrets. Their sorrows. They are a low, constant hum in my blood. A second heartbeat of loss.

He was a man who had survived, but he had not lived. Their eyes met across the room, a chasm of pain, of betrayal, of an unyielding, unforgiving love. The shock, a physical blow, stole the air from Amara’s lungs. The history, a brutal, beautiful, and devastating reality, washed over her like a tidal wave. The pain, a cold, constant knot in her stomach, was a constant reminder of her love. The unresolved passion, a fire that had been extinguished by betrayal and grief, was now a full-blown inferno.

Iris couldn’t help but feel like her heart broke as he shut that door. She couldn’t shake that strange feeling for the rest of the week. “Maybe this week will be better” she said, talking to Midnight. She wondered what Quinn was doing. She never thought to ask for his number if he even had one. Too late for that right? She shrugs walking out the door for her daily 3am walk with Midnight. There wasn’t a storm this time, just a low hanging fog. “I love this weather. It’s so spooky” she giggled. She made her way to the hot spring behind the guest house. It was a weekly ritual and always made her feel better.

But. I was still hoping I guess, that we would be able to work it out. I couldn't hate him, even when I had every reason to. After all, he was the only man I had ever loved. And he was the only man I was going to love. Because the heart is a bitch, you can't make it understand by reasoning with it. It forgets all the hurt someone caused you, all the pain, all the misery. It only remembers those moments when someone made you breathless. Over and over, it just runs toward one person. And unfortunately for me, that one person was Landon.

The cabin sits empty and alone in the clearing as the days shorten, the snow falls, the temperatures plummet, and the darkness encroaches on the light. After class I waited , i felt the need to talk to Richmond now Franklin however as soon as I held his hand in an attempt to speak to him he pulled my hand off as though it was infected and left . I sat on the floor and wept , of what use was it to gain the whole world and lose one’s soul . I lost him, For the first time I honestly believed I lost him and there was no way he would ever forgive me . I lost to my own game , and the feeling , the taste was so bitter.
