A mafia war was one like no other, especially since we followed no rules. Well, in this one, things were different. We were doing this out of love. I was in this situation because of family. To protect my family and my love. This was going to be one of the purest and nastiest wars I was going to be entering. Pure, because its cause was one to keep my loved ones safe. I would do anything to ensure that none of them was harmed. That we all got out of this with as minimum loss as possible. I didn’t want to risk anyone’s life in a nasty man’s game.

The book had been based on a woman who'd gone to war with the dreadful words of, “ I don't love you anymore. ” from her husband.

I nodded. “I know. When I say I love you, I don’t mean to say the love is for the cleaner version of you or the possibility of you. But it means I love you right now, even when your hands are stained with blood. I love the war you hold, not the peace you could bring. But if you did decide to bring peace in the future, I would love that version of you as well, because no matter how many times I live and die, I know I will always fall in love with you.”

He shifted despite the pain and reached for my hand, threading his fingers through mine. “That is not yours to carry alone.” The words hit something fragile inside me, because alone was exactly how I had been carrying every mistake, every death, and every broken decision. As if love meant absorbing all the blame. I let out a shaky breath. “It feels like everything I touch survives at a cost.” His thumb moved slowly over my knuckles. “That is what war does. It lies to you and tells you every consequence is your fault.” I stared at him. “And what does love do?”

They were as clear and blue as the shallows of a Caribbean beach, and so expressive that he never tired of watching her.
