“He doesn’t even want to look at me right now.”
That was the simplest way to say it.
Simpler than telling her about the way he had stood there, drunk, angry, and exhausted, telling me he could never love me. Simpler than repeating the words that still felt lodged somewhere inside me like splinters.
For a moment, all I could hear was her breathing through the line.
Then she said, a little more firmly, “Well, too bad for him.”
A small, tired laugh escaped me before I could stop it.
