What to do when you're in love with your best friend's girl? For Jordan Baker, the answer is obvious - steer clear. But sometimes, life has other plans... Evan and Karli Anders have been married for five years. She’s making plans for them when he gets home from his business trip. An unexpected knock at the door turns out to be Jordan Baker – confirmed bachelor, Evan’s best friend, and the man she’s convinced can’t stand her – standing there, still in his EMT uniform, to give her the most horrible news of her life… Evan’s been killed in a drunk driving accident. Karli must now navigate burying her husband, then prepare to face an additional challenge alone - have and raise the child she just found out she's carrying. Or so she thinks. What she doesn’t realize is that Jordan would happily step up and be the loving partner she wants and needs for the rest of her life - if she’ll only let him in. But an unforeseen twist could dash all Jordan’s hopes for good.
View MoreJordan could still remember the very first time Evan mentioned her. They were juniors in college…
“You’ve got to meet this girl,” Evan told him as they walked toward the quad after class one late September afternoon. “I think she might be the one.”
“The one?” Jordan said, incredulous that ‘Mister One-Night-Stand’ himself would even think about monogamy. “You don’t even know what that means. You go through women like water. You, Evan Anders, are a poster boy for players and heartbreakers everywhere.”
“You’re not wrong,” Evan grinned. “But there’s just something about this girl…anyway, I’m bringing her to the Omega party tonight. I seriously want you to meet her.”
“Whatever, dude,” Jordan replied, shaking his head.
“You’re going, right? Jordan – tell me you’re going. Too much studying isn’t good for you.”
“And you really shouldn’t be going,” Jordan shot back. “You really need to do more studying, Evan. Football’s only gonna get you so far, man, and it’s hard to find a team to play on if they kick your dumb ass out of college.”
Evan looked at him for a long moment.
“Remind me again how it is we’re best friends?”
But Jordan honestly had never been able to figure that one out himself.
He and Evan Anders were as opposite as could be. Evan was six feet two, with broad shoulders and the typical blond-and-blue Adonis-like looks women swoon over, not to mention a gifted football player. He was also extremely outgoing - he’d never met a stranger.
Jordan, on the other hand, preferred solitude and learning, thought his dark brown hair and eyes were boring, and was still hoping for the late growth spurt that would finally launch him past his current best-ever five feet eight inches tall.
But for whatever reason, they’d become fast friends in seventh grade, and it had stayed that way ever since.
“Come on, man,” Evan sulked. “I really want you to meet her.”
“Okay, okay, fine,” Jordan said in exasperation. “But I’m not gonna stay long. Some of us actually care about our grades, you know.”
“You’re such a dork,” Evan teased, and shoved Jordan lightly, like a brother might. “See you tonight, man.”
And Evan veered off the sidewalk, moving over the grass toward the dorms reserved exclusively for the football team.

Four hours later, Jordan found himself in the middle of a collegiate Greek tragedy. The levels of drunkenness were already reaching epic heights by the time he arrived - even for Omegas.
Evan owes me big, he thought bitterly. He’s the only freakin’ reason I’m here.
He shoved his way through a mass of sweaty bodies jumping and swaying to a blaringly loud and seemingly endless techno grind, and finally made it into the frat house’s kitchen where it was quieter – but not by much. Striding to the other side of the room, he took a chance but found only a single cold beer left in the fridge.
Frustrated, he closed the refrigerator door, then turned around and bumped straight into the woman of his dreams.
I’ll be damned. Love at first sight does exist, he thought, then fought against the heat he felt creeping into his face.
She stood, watching him with her sapphire blue eyes, twirling a small strand of her long blond hair around her index finger. She stood maybe five feet six, at the most, with golden, sun-kissed skin and curves in all the right places. Even in a t-shirt and faded jeans, she owned the room.
“Anything other than beer in there?” she asked hopefully, and her sweet Southern drawl was as warm and rich as a fine whiskey.
Jordan stood gaping at her for a moment before he managed to find his voice.
“Nope,” he answered, and it sounded rough and scratchy to his ears.
He cleared his throat and tried again.
“No,” he said. “Not even water.”
“That’s a shame,” the angelic vision in front of him said. “I don’t drink beer.”
“Me either. Too bitter.”
Her cute little nose wrinkled as she answered him.
“I know, right? The taste isn’t bad, but the aftertaste…” her voice trailed off as she shuddered. “Blech.”
“My name’s Jordan,” he said, then endured another stretch of unbearable silence during which they just stared at one another. To break it, he blurted out, “Baker.”
“You’re a baker?” she grinned in amusement, and her smile made his heart grow wings.
“No,” he managed to say, and found himself smiling back at her. “That’s my last name. Jordan Baker.”
She held out her hand in greeting, and when he clasped it, he swore he felt an electric current surge through his body, so powerful he wanted to sing.
She began to speak, to tell him her name, but was interrupted.
“Jordan! My man!” he heard Evan shout from the kitchen doorway. “There you are. And hey, perfect timing. My two favorite people are here.”
Oh no, Jordan thought. Dude, don’t say it…
“Karli, this is Jordan, my best friend since what, fifth grade?”
“Seventh,” he corrected Evan, his stomach filling with lead at what he knew Evan was going to say next.
“Jordan, this is Karli Bellows… the one I was telling you about.”
Of course, she is…
As he watched them standing together, Evan’s arm slung casually around Karli’s dainty shoulders, Jordan realized that for the first time since he’d met Evan Anders, he wanted very badly to be in his shoes…
But it wouldn’t be the last time. Not by a long shot.
Not when it came to Karli Bellows.
In the early morning hours of October tenth, Karli woke from a deep sleep and nudged Jordan’s shoulder.“Baby,” she said through gritted teeth.“Hmm,” came the sleepy response.“No. The baby. I think I’m in labor,” she told him, her pitch rising as the next contraction almost stole her breath away.“And I think my water just broke.”Jordan went from mostly asleep to wide awake in an instant, scrambling for his watch.“Tell me when this one is over, okay? And breathe, honey. In through your nose and out through your mouth,” he directed, moving around the room to get dressed and grab her hospital bag.“It’s gone,” Karli said, and motioned to him to help her sit up and maneuver to the side of the bed. “But I think another one’s pretty close behind it.”When the subsequent contraction began, she panted, “Now,” and he noted the time then coached her breathing through it.“A little under five minutes apart,” he calculated once it had passed. “I think we need to get going.”She nodded, holdi
After three hours, the general surgeon came out to the waiting room.“I’m sure you all will be glad to know EMT Baker should make a full recovery,” he began, and the room erupted with cheers. The surgeon smiled and waited a moment before motioning for quiet so he could continue.“The surgery went well. The knife missed all major organs, thankfully. He did have muscle and ligament damage that required repair, so you all will have to do without him wrestling a gurney for a little while. We’ll keep him for a few days, then send him home.”“How soon can we see him?” Tim asked.“Immediate family only until he’s out of ICU,” the doctor replied. “He’s in post-op right now, and we’ll be moving him to ICU within the next two hours.”“His girlfriend’s right here,” Tim pointed at Karli. “Can she see him in post-op?”Karli lurched to her feet and came to stand beside Tim with hopeful eyes. Tim put an arm around her.“Give us ten minutes,” the surgeon said, “and I’ll send my nurse out to come get
Cake, punch, party games, and an avalanche of opened baby gifts later, it was time to go.Madge approached Karli and enveloped her in a huge hug.“You two are so good together,” she whispered. “This is the most I’ve ever seen Jordan smile. And I am so happy to see you happy again too, Karli.”“Thanks, Madge. Truly.”“Call me if you need anything,” Madge said, and walked away.Karli looked at the mound of gifts once everyone had left.“No way all this is going to fit in my room,” she lamented.“About that,” Jordan said as he came back in from putting another box in the bed of his truck.“Why don’t you move in with me? Think about it. You’re at my place most of the time now anyway, and that second bedroom is completely empty. It would make a great nursery.”She tilted her head and considered.“You know what? Yes. Let’s do it.”“I was hoping you’d say that,” he grinned before he kissed her. “I’m the luckiest man on the planet, did you know that? And it’s because of you.”“When do you wan
“So, that wasn’t so bad,” Karli decided as they left their first childbirth class later that afternoon. “A lot of that stuff I already knew, and I am totally okay with the idea that watching the video isn’t required.”Jordan grinned.“I thought that might make you happy. I’ve had to watch it, as part of my EMT training. It’s pretty, um, intense.”“You know what else is intense? This heat,” she observed, fanning herself with the welcome pamphlet they’d been given. “Late summer in Texas is always a beating, but being almost eight months pregnant in mid-August? That sucks on a whole new level.”“Sounds like you could use air conditioning, a bowl of ice cream, and a foot rub,” Jordan mentioned. “And I just happen to know a place that has all three.”“Lead the way,” she urged. “Before we melt.”In a half-hour, Karli was stretched out contentedly on Jordan’s couch, a bowl of her favored sea salt caramel ice cream in her hands. She was also moaning lightly as Jordan gently worked a knot out
The following Friday Karli had another sonogram to go to, but this time she had someone to share the experience with.Jordan came to Sarah’s as scheduled and just stopped himself from picking Karli up and carrying her like a china doll to the passenger seat.“You sure you can get up in there okay?”“I’m fine,” she chuckled. “May not be able to in another month or so, but right now, I’m good. Stop worrying.”“Can’t help it,” he said earnestly, and received a kiss for his concern. At Dr. Hollard’s office, Jordan held Karli’s hand as the tech, Tracy, raced to keep up with an increasingly active baby.“Trying to get good pictures, but this little angel won’t cooperate,” Tracy commented with a grin.Jordan leaned down close to Karli’s belly.“Hey you in there,” he murmured. “Can you please hold still for just a little while? We’d like to get a good look at you.”Karli gasped when she looked at the monitor, watching her baby slow its movements and turn its head in response to Jordan’s voice
She gasped.“But we only hung out a few…”.“It’s been way, way longer than that,” he interrupted, taking another step closer.“I fell in love with you the moment I saw you at that frat party seven years ago. But my feelings did not need to be the reason I told you. Was Evan’s cheating wrong? Absolutely. Did you deserve to know? Absolutely. But I questioned my motives for wanting to reveal Evan’s secret. Not to mention, I didn’t want to tell you something I knew would hurt you. Does that make sense at all?”“I…I can’t be around you right now,” she whispered, and slowly turned and walked to her car.“Punch me,” he offered, striding after her. “Scream at me. Throw things. Whatever you need to do. But please, Karli, please. Don’t try to drive while you are this upset. Please.”She whirled around again, and her face crumpled as she began to sob.“How could you do that? How could you just… keep quiet like that?”He put his arms around her, and she struggled at first.“No! Get away from me!”
